Frontera Sol of Mexico @ Jaya One

Here at Forever Hungry, we Buggers strive to find places to eat good food. We strive hard. Of course, we do not limit ourselves when it comes to food. That goes against all the principles of Forever Hungry. No, we want to try everything, especially those meals that we hardly try. It was this mindset which gave rise to the idea that we should try some authentic Mexican cuisine.

Hence last Sunday's trip to Frontera Sol of Mexico at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya.

When we first found out about this restaurant, we were quite surprised because they were promoting Tex-Mex cuisine. Aside from sounding like the name of a B-grade horror movie, Tex-Mex is a unique blend of Texas and Mexican food. And Frontera promises its customers a share of this unique cuisine.
Fun Fact: Frontera is Spanish for 'Border'. Texas and Mexico are separated by a border. Nuff said.

Located deep within Wai Sek Kai at Jaya One (Wai Sek Kai is Cantonese for Forever Hungry Street =D), Frontera is quite prominent despite being nestled between several flashy bars.

When we first arrived at Frontera, the first thing we noticed was the decor. The restaurant gave off a very vibrant Mexican feel with the designs...

...and the very captivating bar counter.

Add in the delicious smell of tacos and the sizzling sounds of fajitas, this was totally THE place to be. Especially since all of us were hungry like hyenas.

With Jun our photographer of the evening and the rest just waiting for food, we were seated smack in the middle of the restaurant, giving us a all round view of the interior. Again, the smell of Mexican food wafted across the restaurant, making us (well, me) drool in anticipation at what was to come.

And the menus describing all sorts of delicious and mouthwatering dishes were not helping much either.

This was the tasting menu of the day.

White Lightning Margarita. (more on that in a bit)

Yes, I was the designated driver.

Not long after, the manager of Frontera, the extremely nice Mr Ramesh, sat down and gave us the introduction talk to Tex-Mex cuisine and a little about the history of Frontera.

While serving us a delicious new item on the menu (more on that later)

Pleasant and very conversational, he told us that Frontera catered mostly to those who enjoyed authentic Mexican cuisine and having a warm and friendly environment to enjoy the meal in. It was nice to have someone explain a cuisine which we were about to try for the first time.

But all that being said, the food is the highlight of any food review (thank you Captain Obvious). So enjoy the pictures of all the delicious food Frontera has to offer.

The Fiesta Platter has everything you need to enjoy Tex-Mex. Mainly for sharing, it can also be used to introduce your tastebuds to the uniqueness of Tex-Mex cuisine.

Stuffed Jalapenos. Handbreaded jalapenos and fried to perfection, it's also stuffed with cheese. It's a bit hard but if your teeth are strong enough, its crunchy texture coupled with the oozing cheese and jalapenos make this a real winner.

Also, despite that dangerous looking jalapeno thingy there, it's very far from spicy.

Taquitos de Pollo. A must try. It's one of my personal favorites. It is actually chicken wrapped in corn tortilla and fried to crispy perfection. Add in the homemade dip, it's one of the most delicious things you will ever munch on. I wanted seconds, but I think ECF beat me to it. That bugger is fast.

BBQ Wings. In all honesty, this wasn't outstanding in any way. It is basically ordinary BBQ chicken wings you can get from anywhere. Tasty but not quite special.

Jalapeno Crab Cakes. When I first looked at the tasting menu and saw 2 dishes with jalapeno, I freaked out. I can't stand spicy stuff and jalapenos are the hottest chili around. But I just couldn't resist trying one Jalapeno Crab Cake...and immediately fell in love. It is the perfect mix of crab patty and jalapenos. Crunchy on the outside and crabby on the inside, it totally left my tastebuds wanting more. Marcus polished 2 crab cakes in seconds. Yes, it was that delicious. And best of all, it wasn't at all spicy.

The Habanero Hot Wings. Touted as a best seller, I just had to try it for myself. I immediately regretted this rash decision. The blend of spicy and sour really left me in tears. I had to ask for more water because it was just so hot. The other Buggers, whose tongues are immune to such heat, happily ate every last bite of these spicy chicken wings. Yes, it is delicious-says the rest of the Buggers. For me, I'll pass. Not for the spicy intolerant crowd.

Chicken and beef combo fajitas. At last, the most delicious and most anticipated dish arrived. Sizzling merrily away on a hot plate, the smell was just overpowering. Along with the tortilla and the small side dishes (consisting of red & green bell pepper, shredded cheese and sour cream and pico de gallo (a salad)) this was an epic change in fortunes for my damaged tastebuds.

Just look at that meat. So tempting, so juicy. Don't you wanna sink your teeth into these meat slices? Delicious is the only word I can say right now. 'I want some NOW!' is in close second.

Arroz ala Mexicana. This is a new item on the menu (as shown in the picture above) and we're fortunate to be able to try it. Also known as Spanish rice, the rice is cooked with a tomato base. To make it even more awesome, there are tons of seafood added into the mix. Squids, prawns and mussels are liberally thrown into the dish. Marcus is a huge mussels fan and even he said 'No more mussels please.' It's a great dish to order when you want to share with your friends or family.

To wash it all down, Ramesh recommended us some of Frontera's most famous margaritas.

As shown.

Among the three, the Horny Margarita is the restaurant's bestseller. No questions as to why.

A tequila called Hornitos? Someone is really creative with names.

The Padre Island Margarita. A little too...tropical and citric for our tastes.

The large cup in the background is called the Cadillac Margarita. According to Jun, it's a margarita for little kids (or designated drivers like me).

And so our food review comes to an end. Delicious Tex-Mex meal washed down with icy cold margaritas with white corn tortilla chips and homemade salsa.

A huge shoutout to Mr Ramesh for being such a great host and so friendly. If you visit Frontera, he's most likely at the bar. Look for him.

So comes to a close an evening of chatting, laughter and lots of good food with the Buggers.

 Albeit with silly faces.

Good times. Good times.

Yes, we're still Forever Hungry.
